In 2022, Will Russell, longtime Horse Flies mix engineer, collaborator, and pal, was cleaning out some closets at his studio, Electric Wilburland. While doing this, he ran across a couple of CDs of Horse Flies demos we’d recorded with him in the early 1990s. There were two different sessions (one in ‘91 and another in ‘93) done while we were thinking about material for another album and trying to get another record deal. There were no tapes remaining, just the two CDs of the demo mixes. These were done in the days before digital recording, mixing, and editing, in a very small, very scrappy studio Will had then near the train tracks in downtown Ithaca. Our title for this album, "I Don’t Remember," comes from the fact that none of us, at least at first, could remember having done these sessions. We recognized the songs, but we had no memory of recording them. Eventually, we did piece things together, and after listening a bunch, we decided we liked their energy and the time capsule they represent, so we thought it might be fun to put them out. Only one, Carnival Lips, has been released before (on Until the Ocean), although we did play some of these live around that time. Here they are, demo warts and all. Hope you enjoy them…
